The Dundee Blues Bonanza Programme 2008

Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres

This year the Bonanza in conjunction with Mansell Construction are helping Maggie's Cancer Centres to raise money. Our mission this year is to try and raise a considerable amount for this very worthwhile cause, that unfortunately will touch the lives, in one way or another of many of us. Mansell are also one of the sponsors of the Bonanza this year, and their support is gratefully acknowledged by the committee, in helping to keep the Bonanza alive.

Maggie representatives will be visible involved during the International Events and also at other venues during the Bonanza weekend.

The DBB committee has pledged to donate 50% of all of our fundraising this this year to Maggie's. So, for the sale of every raffle ticket, every auction bid and also every sale of this year’s Bonanza Programme, half will goe to Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres. In saddition, Carling have generously donated a guitar signed by the legendary Johnny Winter, This item will be put up for auction on Maggies own web site. We urge you to dig deep this year to help us support Maggie's, as they are self funding. Many thanks for your support, the DBB Committee.

The heavy fifties Chicago swing is a trademark of the band and is used to great effect on this track.

Track 04 - Rockin Armadillos - Wage Slave
Rockin Armadillos' frontman Tim Aves played five shows over the 2007 Blues Bonanza weekend - two with an improvised band called The Jumpin' Jalapenos, one solo, one as the harmonica player with the Son Henry Band and one sitting in on harp with Son Henry, Dave “Barrelhouse” Blair and Billy “Blindman” Allardyce. He had such a great time, he vowed to bring his band, The Rockin' Armadillos up from Essex for the 2008 Bonanza to play songs from the Armadillos’ repertoire, including “Wageslave”, which features on the band’s, “Roadtrip” CD - due out this Autumn.

Track 09 - Bates & Newton - Brampton Blues
Bates and Newton are two of the finest performers to emerge from from the Northeast of England, an area long synonymous with authentic Blues players. Together they deliver a hugely entertaining set of tunes influenzed by the Delta, Chicago and beyond, all delivered with a dose of irreverent humour. The Brampton Blues track is taken from their new CD called 'Dynamite’

Track 10 - Bob Hall - Juke Box Boogie
Critically acknowledged as Britain’s finest blues and boogie pianist, Bob Hall’s distinctive, elegant and original piano style has influenced generations of piano players and left a lasting legacy. He first came to fame in the rhythm ‘n’ blues explosion of the sixties, as a founder member of The Groundhogs and later Savoy Brown. Over the years Bob has made (literally) hundreds of recordings, many of which are still available on CD. Of these, eight are solo albums of the highest quality as this track called 'Juke Box Boogie' can testify.

Track 11 - Blues Positive - Positively Blue
Blues positive keep their sound fresh with a wide range of instrumentation, musical styles and material. One minute pumping out hard-driving harp-led Chicago blues à la Sonny Boy Williamson; the next, raw Nina Simone with searing tenor sax. Classic guitar-based British blues then more whimsical, jazzier, Mose Allison, vintage Elmore James style electric slide-guitar, the list goes on. Postively Blue is typical of their style.

Track 12 - Jim Murray - My Gal Sue
Jim Murray is an exceptional acoustic guitar player, as you can hear from this track called 'My Gal Sue', this taken from his recent album called 'My Time to be Alone'. This track is his nod to the great guitar playing of Blind Boy Fuller, played on a modern National Resophonic M2 guitar.

Track 13 - BlueBelly - Always Right Baby Blues
Dougie Burns and Bobby McDonald. Following a successful stint at the 2004 Orkney Blues Festival and other festivals around the country, including four years in a row at the Dundee Blues Bonanza, and also backed up with both of their splendid CD 'BLUEBELLY', the Band has kept gigging regularly into 2008. Dougie and Bobby have also co-written and recordedBluebelly a new song, "ALWAYS RIGHT BABY BLUES", for the Inverness Market Bar CD released for music charities in the North of Scotland.

Track 14 - Wolftrain - Bourbon St
Wolftrain’s self penned Bourbon Street offers the image of blues, wine and women. The sax constructing warm summer days and hot nights, the groove hinting of bodies on the dance floor.....pass me another drink and boogie on down.

Track 15 - Krissy Matthews - Young Boy
The latest release "No Age Limit" was recorded February 2007 when Krissy was 14 at the Juke Joint Studios, Notodden, Norway.

Track 16 - Son Henry - Heartache In My House
Son Henry made his UK debut in Dundee at the Bonanza in 2005 and hasn’t slowed down since. His contribution here is called ‘Heartache in my House’, and features all the musical elements he’s known for- great guitar playing, fluid lap steel guitar and baritone vocals over a funky groove. It’s best heard at a loud volume. All that’s missing here are the wisecracks.

Track 17 - Black Cat Jook Band - Nobodys Business
The track 'Nobody's Business' is a traditional piece recorded by the Black Cat Jook Band, a group concentrating on the roots side of the blues in particular Jug bands. They have a long history on the Scottish blues scene and bring back to life to old time traditional material of bygone ages, with guitars, mandolin, tea chest bass and
washboard.

Track 18 - Midnight Blues Band - You Don't Want Me
The Midnight Blues Band are strongly influenced by the music of Gary Moore and Pink Floyd, the band are regulars at the Dundee Blues Bonanza, where they have been very well received. Strong, raking guitar solos combine with the rich hammond organ tones to complete the overall flavour of this newly penned and recorded track. The song 'You Dont want Me' is classic Midnight Blues Band material and is typical of what to expect from this group.

Track 19 - Lil Jimmy Reed - Tell Me Baby
Lil Jimmy Reed recorded this track in Scotland during the 2006 Dundee Blues Bonanza, it was recorded live in the Marquee, basically on a whim as the sound guy hit the record button on the sound equipment. When listening to the track they realised they had something special here and that they had caught some of those magical moments when Jimmy played for wildy enthusiastic blues audiences. 'Tell me Baby' is self penned.

Bonanza 2008 Artwork by Gillian Sutherland and The Arctic Bar

The new artwork for the 2008 Bonanza has been created and we would like to thank The Arctic Bar who have generously provided sponsorship for this year’s design.

Once again, the DBB Committee would like to thank local artist Gillian Sutherland, for once again providing another beautiful piece of work that will be used on our programme and other merchandise. This is the fifth year in succession that we have been fortunate enough to tap into a natural talent that Gillian has in abundance.

Gillian is mainly self taught, and amongst other things, she is known to work with sculptures, collages, caricatures and high relief integrated paintings.

Gillian has also been involved in a number of community projects, but has always found the time to provide her talents for the Dundee Blues Bonanza.

We consider ourselves lucky to have Gillian on board again and look forward to many more future collaborations.

Dundee Legends - The Ninewells Dragon

In Dundee High Street, opposite The City Square, stands a magnificent statue of the Ninewells Dragon. Many passers by admire this wonderful statue, without knowing the story behind it.

Legend has it that the farmer at Pitempan, a father of nine lovely daughters asked for a drink from his favourite well, located close to the farm. The first of the farmer’s daughters went to fetch her father a drink but never returned. After a while, a second daughter went to search for her missing sister, and alas did not return either. Six other sisters followed in turn, each looking for their missing siblings.

The ninth and final sister also went to the well to search for her missing sisters, only to find the bodies of her kin guarded by a fearsome dragon. Her screams alerted her lover the brave Martin, who rushed to her aid.

A marathon battle ensued that lasted from Pitempan all the way to Balkello, with Martin finally slaying the beast, only to discover that his love had died of shock.

In honour of Martin’s heroics, the wellspring at Pitempan was renamed The Nine Maidens Well. Further tributes were paid to Martin, with stones erected at both Strathmartin and Balkello by grateful locals.

A rhyme relating to the event came into being afterwards and goes :-

Tempted at Pitempton,
Draigled at Baldragon,
Stricken at Strathmartin,
And kill'd at Martin's Stane
